SEIZE THE DAY

People choose to become teachers for many different reasons. I became a teacher because of my previous experience as a less than cooperative student . As a student the traditional classroom failed to meet my needs as a learner. Disengagement and behavioural problems flourished whilst interest, creativity and attendance diminished. "Back in my day" I don't know if teachers had much choice in how the classroom worked, perhaps it simply was a matter of "feeding" students with factual content that would be regurgitated at a later date. Everyone sat so still and contributed so little.

As a teacher I hope to provide the students in my class with countless opportunities to become empathetic, reflective, creative and motivated learners. The world outside the classroom is exciting and rich in opportunities to succeed and to "seize the day".

I hope to use this blog to keep a little focus in my learning and teaching journey. I want to seize the magic of each and every day for my students and for myself. I wonder how I will go?

  2. Hello Janine,
I have been teaching a long time, began in Feb 1975.I am still enjoying teaching, especially now that I teach Visual Arts. I am writing to congratulate you on starting a blig, joining Classroom 2.0 and about being so purposeful in your aproach to teaching. I'm sad that there's so many teachers out there whose hearts are not really in teaching and seem suspicious of those of us who still have enthusiasm for the job. All the very best for a great year in 2009.

  4. Just watched the clip after not seeing the film for ages. Reminded me how I wished I could teach like that. I'd like a window into your classroom from the sounds of your very specific teaching goals. I'm hoping to do more of that this year too.
